3 Big Ideas

Before you cross the chasm, sell the vision not the value.

Hey there, party animal!

Did you know that 72% of CEOs believe that the ability to be agile is the new currency of business?

I’m not surprised. Agility, at its core, is about quickly adapting to change. But what if we took it a step further? That's where anti-fragility comes into play. As a business owner myself, I've observed how agility and anti-fragility are two sides of the same coin.

This got me thinking: How can the concept of being 'anti-fragile' be applied to your messaging strategy?

First, a quick ‘let’s humanize’ this new-fangled word. Anti-fragile basically means that it’s possible to improve your odds of success in a chaotic, ever-evolving environment.

Welcome to the anti-fragile advantage.

Remember that time when the whole world shut down because of a pandemic? We shunned our friends, had drive-by birthday parties, and started making sourdough. We went crazy for Clubhouse (remember that app??). And we embraced platforms like LunchClub (or at least I did) – an online platform where you get randomly paired with people to do a virtual meeting.

I met loads of cool people on LunchClub. In fact, I just wrapped a piece of business with someone I met on the platform who has an agency in Canada. Cool huh? That’s the power of randomness.

You see, back when we all thought it was the end of days, some folks tried new things, some folks didn’t. While some were hesitant, others embraced change. But anti-fragility isn't just about resilience; it's about thriving in chaos.

When the only constant is change, your messaging strategy needs to be able to weather the storm too.

And that’s why consistency matters.

Consistency in messaging isn't just good practice; it's an anti-fragile strategy. When I couldn’t connect with people in person to network anymore, I found Lunchclub gave me a new way to meet other folks in business.

When your message is consistent, and you message consistently, your business can withstand market fluctuations and even benefit from them.

Here’s why: Because others will stick their heads in the sand, try to wait it out, and they will miss opportunities that you won’t.

Consistency allows you to be present where and when opportunities arise, even when those opportunities are unpredictable.

Being anti-fragile is a lot about putting yourself in places for randomness to strike. So when a LinkedIn follower who’s never liked or commented on a single thing you’ve posted suddenly and decisively reaches out to do business, you're prepared to capitalize on the “spooky” opportunity.

Spooky business isn't just luck; it's the result of an anti-fragile approach. When you're consistently present in key messaging channels, you're casting a wider net for these random opportunities to find you.

In other words, when you “show up” you get an unfair share.

Here’s the takeaway: put yourself in a position where luck can find you.

Get out there with your message! Be consistently consistent.

Doing nothing diminishes your chances for spooky business. Invest in a robust messaging playbook to prepare you for the randomness and uncertainty that are your friends in the business world.

It's not just about what you say, but how you say it, who says it, and where you say it.

Get this mix right, and you won't just capture attention—you'll win opportunities.

Until next time, stay resilient!

3 things that made me smarter this week.

  1. I’m suddenly addicted to the podcast The Knowledge Project. If you want a real treat, listen to episode #171 with Naval Ravikant, The Angel Philosopher.
  2. I contributed to a Forbes article on managing content among diverse teams by using these situations as listening opportunities..
  3. I’m reading The Great Mental Models: General Thinking Concepts by Farnam Street, which inspired this newsletter today – specifically chapter 6 on Probabilistic Thinking.
