What is narrative infrastructure and why do organizations need it?

THE ANSWER

Narrative infrastructure is the system a company uses to capture, store, and retrieve its own stories and proof, so that the right evidence is available at the moment someone needs it. It is the difference between a company that has stories somewhere and a company that can actually find and use them on demand. Most organizations have the raw material. Almost none have the infrastructure.

Organizations need it because stories are useless if you cannot retrieve them. A great customer result that lives in one person's memory, or buried in a Slack thread, or tagged uselessly in a CRM, might as well not exist. When the sales team needs proof for a specific objection, or marketing needs a story for a specific segment, the material has to be findable, or the moment passes and a generic claim gets used instead. That gap between having stories and being able to use them is exactly what narrative infrastructure closes.

The reason this rises to an organizational need, rather than a marketing nice-to-have, is scale. A small company can hold its stories in a founder's head. A growing one cannot. As the company gets bigger, the number of stories grows while the ability of any one person to remember them shrinks, and without a system the whole trust-building capacity of the organization quietly leaks away. Narrative infrastructure is what lets a company keep proving itself as it scales, instead of getting vaguer the larger it gets.
